A recent survey has shown that the North West of England is the capital for whiplash claims, with Wigan featuring high on the list.
Figures revealed that in 2011 there were between 10 and 14 compensation claims made for personal injuries caused by whiplash per 1,000 people in the city, and a total of more than 3,000 claims made that year.
Liverpool was identified at the top of the list with 18,500 compensation claims, followed by Bolton with 6,500 claims.
Insurers have commented that they would like to challenge more whiplash compensation claims but concerns about legal fees made them more likely to settle out of court.
One of the main challenges for insurers is that there are no physical symptoms displayed with whiplash making it hard to prove whether or not a claim for whiplash compensation is genuine.
