The 46-year-old doctor had been driving through Ballyedmond, Co. Wexford, in January 2007 when the horse escaped from a nearby field and ran into the road.
The collision was so severe that the horse was thrown into the air and landed on the roof of the car, trapping the doctor inside for nearly two hours until he was freed by emergency services.
The doctor had to have a steel plate inserted into his neck and underwent surgery on his back.
He also suffered post-traumatic stress caused by anguish over the car accident and has been unable to return to full-time duties at work.
He has since made a claim for road traffic accident compensation against the horse's owner and was awarded £586,637 in damages at the Irish High Court.
