The 19-year-old from Cowlersley, near Huddersfield, is thought to have been a passenger returning from an 18th birthday party when the car crash occurred. No other vehicle is thought to have been involved, but the car went through a wall, and ended up back on its wheels on the moors.
The other three occupants of the car escaped with minor personal injury.
After surgery, the boy with serious personal injury has been taken into intensive care in the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.
A police spokesperson invited witnesses to come forward with any information regarding the car accident, asking them to call 01484 436847.
