Hampshire County Council is hoping to see a decrease in their car accident rates and the rate of car accident compensation following improvement work on a notorious stretch of road in Basingstoke.
The council has began the construction of five pedestrian crossing points along Popley Way and is going to reduce the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph.
The £1.2 million improvement scheme has delighted Popley's county councillor Jane Frankum who has campaigned for increased safety measures in the town for more than a decade.
Speaking of the scheme, she commented, "Over the years, there have always been terrible accidents along Popley Way.
"For a long, long, time I have been trying to get the speed limit reduced."
The work is expected to take around a year to complete and is being funded by the county council and developer contributions.
It is hoped to help reduce the number of car accidents and consequently see a fall in the rate of accident compensation claims in the area.
