Mobile phone related car accidentsMobile phone use while driving is a common known cause of car accidents. One third of British drivers have had a car crash or near miss as a result of noise distractions such as mobile phones. Although it is illegal to use you mobile phone while driving in many countries the problem is still at large. In the UK drivers can be prosecuted for dangerous or careless driving if caught using a mobile phone on the road and fined a fixed penalty of £30 which can rise to £1,000 if contested. But it seems that these fines are having little deterrence in the UK as drivers are still answering their phones without using the suggested hands free kits. In response to this behaviour which is doing nothing to reduce the amount of road traffic accidents the government want to introduce a licence points penalty and double the fine to £60. Today people have less time so see the journey to work as an opportunity to prepare for their next meeting. When using a mobile phone a driver’s concentration and awareness of the road are reduced. This explains why more car accidents are likely. Research has suggested that the use of mobile phones while driving is more dangerous than drunk driving. Talking on the phone is seen to decrease drivers’ reactions by almost 50% and a car crash is believed four times more likely if a driver is using a mobile. Consequently, car accidents caused by drivers using mobile phones are more likely to result in personal injuries for those involved. Research also suggests that hands free kits do not eliminate the distraction that can cause road accidents. It seems as technology continues to grow so will the amount of people using mobile phones. But mobile use is not the only distraction to drivers that can increase the risk of car accidents. There have also been sightings of women applying makeup and men shaving while driving which are equally as worrying. How we can help following a car accident
