Crash claims life of Russian footballer

Russian football is in a state of mourning following the death of one of its future stars in a motorcycle accident.

22-year-old Lenar Gilmullin, a full-back with Russian Premier League side FC Rubin Kazan, was involved in the motorbike accident after returning home from his own birthday party on the evening of 17th June.

A passenger on the bike, he suffered serious head injuries in the motorcycle accident and died several days later from extensive brain damage.

Gilmullin had made numerous appearances for Russia's Under-21 team and pundits were predicting a bright future for the Tatar defender, expecting him to one day excel at full international level.

A statement by FC Rubin Kazan was made following news of the fatal motorcycle accident and the club's official website said, "The management, staff and players at Rubin express their deepest condolences to Lenar's family and friends.

"We will always remember what a talented footballer, devoted friend and genuine person he was."
