RoSPA in bid to cut road deaths

An increase in the number of motorbike accident deaths on UK roads has resulted in the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) calling on employers to give their staff the opportunity to develop their riding skills.

Latest Department for Transport (DfT) figures reveal that 599 people were killed in motorcycle accidents during 2006, a five percent rise on the number of fatalities recorded in 2005.

It is for this reason that RoSPA has produced a guide entitled Safer Motorcycling Through Work which gives advice on promoting safe riding initiatives via the workplace.

The guide includes suggestions such as offering advanced rider training, allowing workers to participate in track days and giving them the opportunity to attend motorcycle safety presentations.

A RoSPA spokesman highlighted the importance of the initiative in preventing motorbike accidents and said, "People are often extremely busy with various commitments away from work, so we hope employers will consider enabling their staff to develop these skills via the workplace.

"Providing such opportunities for staff who ride privately, as well as those who ride for work purposes, can also bring very real business benefits.

"The effects of a motorcycle accident, whether it happened in or out of work, are costly, and helping staff stay safe therefore makes good business sense."

BP365, the motorbike accident compensation claim experts, fully support RoSPA's efforts and a spokeswoman said, "Anything that helps to cut death and serious personal injury among bikers has our full backing."
