Reckless riding requires custodial sentence

A judge at Exeter Crown Court sentenced a rider to six months in prison for behaviour that could have caused a serious motorbike accident.

The rider, from Barnstaple in Devon, was caught travelling at 122mph with his 14-year-old son riding pillion in April 2008.

The court heard how the son, who was on an access visit with his father, was not wearing protective clothing whilst travelling on the Suzuki 1300cc motorbike.

The 47-year-old pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at an earlier hearing, saying that he had "pulled back the throttle" as it had "started to rain".

Judge Phillip Wassell told the motorbike rider, "Had you lost control of your motorcycle it would have become a missile and caused a serious accident and probably death would have followed.

"The lack of responsibility is almost unbelievable.

"The matter is so serious a custodial sentence cannot be avoided."

The reckless behaviour that could have caused a devastating motorbike accident occurred on the North Devon Link Road, near South Molton.
