Biker deaths increase

Deaths and personal injuries caused by motorcycle accidents in the North East have increased by more than half in the past decade, the latest figures have revealed.

The shocking statistics were unveiled by the Department for Transport (DFT) and make grim reading for bikers from cities such as Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Durham and Hartlepool.

The motorbike accident statistics are in sharp contrast to those relating to car crashes, which show that fatalities and injuries of motorists have actually fallen significantly over the past ten years.

The DFT have hinted that the rise in incidents involving bikers could be due to many people turning to motorcycles as a way to beat rush hour congestion.

They recognise the importance of education in preventing road accidents and a spokesman said, "This year we have spent £1.5 million, including a high profile TV and radio campaign, on educating road users and the dangers that motorcyclists face and the need to take more care around motorcycles."

Statistics detailing the number of North East bikers making personal injury compensation claims following involvement in motorcycle accidents have not yet been published.
