Zero rate VAT for motorbike crash leathers?

A Lakeland hairdresser who survived a motorcycle accident thanks to her leathers has been cited as an inspiration behind a campaign by UK MPs to have all protective wear zero-rated for VAT.

The woman's motorbike accident occurred in Scotland earlier this year when she was thrown from her pillion position after her boyfriend was forced to swerve to avoid a road traffic accident with an approaching lorry. She landed on hard asphalt and was airlifted to hospital in fears of serious personal injury to her spine.

However, no serious motorcycle injury was found to have occurred, and the woman was released four hours later. Her leathers were thought to have protected her during the near-crash.

If MPs succeed in having protective leatherwear's VAT costs removed, and thus made cheaper, this may lead to fewer personal injuries (and fewer compensation claims) resulting from motorcycle accidents.
