Police issue warning to riders

Police and road safety experts have warned of the motorcycle accident dangers of riding off-road motorbikes on public paths following personal injury being suffered by a rider who collided with a gate.

The motorcycle accident in question happened on a canal towpath in Inverness this week; the rider was hospitalised with his injuries.

Sgt Gus Stewart, a spokesperson with the Northern Constabulary in Scotland, commented, "We ask that if you are using any such vehicle you seek approval of the land owners first or seek to find approved clubs or tracks in the area.

"I would also like to remind riders, if your motorcycle is being used on a road or public place it requires to be covered by a policy of insurance.

"If you don't, you run the risk of being reported, your motorcycle being seized, and in the worst case, it thereafter being destroyed."

Similarly, police in Bradford have also recently warned of the danger of such motorcycle accidents, pointing out that both riders and the public risked the danger of suffering personal injury.

A Bradford police spokesperson warned that those caught breaking the law would find themselves needing the assistance of a solicitor. "We will take action against anyone riding a bike either without documentation, or if they do and are driving in a dangerous or anti-social manner," he said.
