The road traffic accident occurred as a white van turned right, across the Shirecliff Road, toward a pub car park. The driver of the van, a 36-year-old man, was not hurt.
Following the motorbike crash, the road was closed for three hours while police investigated the scene.
The man is said to be stable in intensive care, in the Northern General Hospital.
Police have invited any witnesses to the motorcycle accident to contact them on the Accident Witness Line, 0114 2202970.
