Motorcycle accident results in serious injuries

A man who suffered serious personal injuries in a motorcycle accident has been awarded over £530,000 after making a compensation claim for damages.

The 36-year-old Cumbrian man was cycling along a Carlisle road in March 2002 when he was hit by an overtaking motorbike. He suffered extensive injuries in the road accident including dislocated knees, a fractured skull, broken facial bones, shoulder damage and bleeding in his brain.

Rushed to hospital by paramedics, he spent time in intensive care and was kept in hospital for two weeks while doctors carried out a number of operations.

Despite his release, however, the cyclist was unable to return to his pre-motorcycle accident state and soon discovered that the head injuries he suffered in the smash were affecting his life.

Explaining this to Carlisle County Court, he said, "I can't remember what I have done or what I have been told from one minute to the next. I try to make a list and then forget where the list is. I go to the shop on my bike, and then walk home, forgetting that I have been on my bike."

He also told the court how the motorcycle accident has left him irritable and liable to lose his temper several times a day.

The court agreed with the man's personal injury solicitors that it is unlikely he will be able to work again and ordered the insurance company of the motorcyclist who caused the road accident to pay personal injury compensation of £530,901.
