Australian man's outrage over solicitor fees

A 30-year-old Australian man has lodged a complaint with the country's legal regulator, saying the personal injury lawyers who represented his motorcycle accident claim charged him unreasonably high fees.

Although the lawyers were successful in securing the man AUS$1.5 million compensation for his motorcycle accident claim, they billed him for more than AUS$320,000 in costs, fees and disbursements, including around AUS$9,000 for photocopying.

A number of legal experts who specialise in cases similar to the 30-year-olds have spoken out against the man's lawyers, describing the costs incurred as "grossly excessive" and "outrageous".

The claimant, who lost his arm in the accident and spent one week in a coma, told media he was shocked when he first saw the motorcycle accident claim bill, "Just looking at the bill was infuriating. I thought, 'How dare you. You are supposed to be on my side. I am trusting you'. Nine thousand dollars for photocopying pieces of paper? I don't think so. I feel like this is just greed on my loss."
