A tragic motorcycle accident caused by an out-of-control military helicopter has claimed nine lives in the Philippines.
It is believed that seven people were crowded onto two motorbikes when a Huey helicopter fell from the sky and crashed down onto the machines. All seven were killed instantly and two of the helicopter's crew also died in the smash. Two other military personnel were travelling in the helicopter at the time and are thought to now be in hospital with serious personal injuries.
The bizarre motorcycle accident occurred in a village on the Philippine island of Mactan and the air force has promised to pay for the burial costs of those killed in the tragedy.
The exact reasons for the helicopter crash are unknown and some have claimed that a kite became entangled in the chopper's rotor, causing it to lose control and crash to earth. An anonymous air force officer, however, insisted that this was not the case and said that the accident was caused by the helicopter suffering serious engine trouble at an altitude of 400 feet.
The Philippine air force's entire fleet of Vietnam War-era Hueys has now been grounded while investigators establish the cause of the catastrophe.
