Motorcycle crash death blamed on licence loophole by father

Following the death of his son in a motorbike accident, a Basingstoke man is campaigning for the law regarding licences to be tightened. His son, an Army sergeant who "liked to go fast", had taken advantage of a legal loophole that allowed him to get a UK motorcycle licence without this country's stringent testing.

The grieving parent told his local paper that his son's test, taken in Cyprus, had involved simply driving around cones for half an hour without accident. He said, "Basically, you can go away to Cyprus for a holiday and take a test in 30 minutes, and that can be used here. That is absolutely obscene. I feel let down by the EU because they allow it. I'm sure [my son] is not the only man or woman who has died as a result of the law."

The 34-year-old sergeant sustained fatal personal injury when his 600cc Honda motorcycle crashed into a car in Wiltshire in 2008. Examination of the bike after the crash showed both tyres to be under-inflated, with the back wheel seriously worn, and its brake fluid to need changing.

The coroner, who recorded a verdict of death by misadventure in the motorbike accident, has also called for the licence loophole to be closed.
