Motocross fan puts motorbike accident behind him

A motorcycle enthusiast whose dreams of becoming a motocross legend were shattered by a horrific motorbike accident is back on two wheels after refusing to give up on the sport he loves.

24-year-old Simon Lawson suffered spinal injuries and was paralysed from the chest down after the motorcycle accident in 2001.

But the Cumbrian biker has surprised his friends and family by getting back in the saddle and now spends his spare time tearing around the motocross tracks that he used to use nearly every day.

The bike he now uses is a Kawasaki KXF 250 which has been specially customised by him and his father, former Workington Comets speedway star Steve Lawson.

Simon's mother, Kath, paid tribute to her brave son and told a local newspaper, "When I watch him with the rest of the lads, he looks part of the old gang again.

"He has gone back to the old Simon that I hadn't seen for all those years."

She also told how his courage could be inspiration for others who have been left with serious personal injuries following motorbike accidents, saying, "If there are people out there in a similar position who can get something out of this, then that's brilliant."
