Crash risks face crackdown in Manchester

Authorities in Manchester are endeavouring to reduce motorcycle accidents involving off-road bikes by clamping down on the illegal use of such vehicles.

After Chorlton residents complained about fears of a motorbike crash when the bikes were being used on local playing fields and surrounding areas, Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester Police and Southways Housing Association combined forces to begin the crackdown.

This will comprise a patrol to watch out for people using the off-road vehicles, and a publicity campaign to ensure people are aware of the illegality of riding them in the wrong place, not to mention the risk of personal injury arising from a motorcycle accident.

Illegally ridden bikes may be confiscated and crushed; local authorities have also warned that people who store these bikes in their flat may be contravening local regulations, and that they may risk eviction if they are found there.

A local police spokesperson said "We really want to make it clear to owners of off-road bikes that we will confiscate any motorbikes being used in a public place, whether the machine is ridden on a public road or on private land.

"Not only do the bikes cause nuisance and pose an extreme safety risk to people in the community, but the drivers are putting themselves at risk. We ask for the co-operation of young people and parents in helping to tackle this matter."

As well as working to prevent motorcycle accidents, the patrols will be able to advise on low-level crime and anti-social behaviour.
