Horse riders told to steer clear of bikers

The British Horse Society has made efforts to prevent its members suffering serious personal injuries as the result of motorcycle accidents by issuing a warning concerning the current Manx TT races.

Horse riders have been advised to keep off the Isle of Man's roads during the popular event or, if they insist on riding their four-legged beasts, have been warned about the importance of wearing high-visibility clothing.

A spokesman from the British Horse Society made the motorbike accident plea, saying, "The Island is going to be swamped with bikers, many of whom will be unfamiliar with the roads and travelling at excessive speeds, both on main roads and the TT course."

Local police officers will be out in force throughout the TT fortnight and have revealed that they are determined to cut the high number of road accidents and motorcycle accidents that often occur during the event.

Inspector Derek Flint from the Isle of Man Constabulary said, "Aherence to the speed limits in the towns and villages is imperative. We have a number of speed enforcement teams out, and compliance will be rigorously enforced."
