A Government report has shown that most motorcycle accidents involving another vehicle are caused by the other road user failing to notice the biker.
The research showed that 47% of car-motorcycle collisions and 50% of van-motorcycle collisions were caused by the driver failing to look properly, compared to just 16% that happened as a result of bikers' poor observation.
The statistics also revealed that just 4% of motorcycle accidents were caused, at least in part, by the rider travelling above the speed limit; in comparison, speeding was a contributing factor in 5% of all road accidents.
The findings of this research fly in the face of previous studies, many of which claimed speeding to be a causative factor in up to a third of road traffic accidents, as well as the popular belief that the biker is often at fault in motorcycle accidents.
