Buxton man jailed again after drunken motorcycle crash

A Buxton man arrested after a motorcycle crash is facing his ninth jail term, after having committed fourteen offences of driving whilst disqualified.

After being called to investigate a motorcycle accident, the Buxton police found a man they recognised as the repeat offender nursing a personal injury to his knee. He refused to take a breath test, and when one was taken hours later at a hospital, was still well over the legal limit for alcohol levels.

No one else is thought to have suffered personal injury.

His defending lawyer said that "The defendant would say himself that drink is behind all of his offending. He has been disqualified on a number of occasions, the last time being January 2, 2008 when he received a suspended sentence. For the offence of driving whilst disqualified, he has had eight different custodial sentences.

"He feels he needs to get the option to address his drinking problem."

The judge sentenced the man to sixteen weeks in prison for driving whilst disqualified when the motorcycle crash occurred; a concurrent four weeks were handed down for driving under the influence of alcohol, and a further eight weeks for committing these offences while under a suspended sentence.
