Swedish police arrest Bandido after hand grenade attacks

Police in Sweden have arrested one of the leading members of the notorious Bandidos biker gang after two cars were blown up with hand grenades in Gothenburg.

Nobody was hurt in the explosions but both vehicles were destroyed and passers-by were sent fleeing in panic. It is believed the attacks were made after the drivers of the two cars, a taxi driver and a restaurant owner, acted as witnesses in the conviction of a Bandido member earlier this year.

The Bandidos started out as a motorbike gang in the 1960s but some members have since become involved in drug dealing and blackmailing.

The individual arrested was a 32-year-old non-Swede and Malin Sahlstrom, a Gothenburg police spokeswoman, told reporters, "The man in custody was taken in a police raid yesterday at a Bandidos meeting place.

"He is being held in connection to both bombings."

It is thought that the hand grenades were placed under the back tyres of the cars and were detonated when the vehicles drove over them.

Investigations into the explosions are continuing.
