A look at celebs who have made amazing recoveries following motorbike accidentsPick up any newspaper or watch a news programme on the TV and the chances are that there's going to be some tragic tale telling of a motorbike accident that's claimed the life of its rider. For us bike enthusiasts it really is a horrible thing to take in and, sadly, the majority of us probably know of someone who's lost their life doing the thing they love - riding. But despite all the bad press and the horror stories that we hear, there have actually been some quite remarkable reports of people who have battled back against all the odds and made amazing recoveries following nasty motorbike accidents. Marc Almond The singer had been riding pillion on a friend's bike at the time of the motorcycle accident and suffered severe head injuries as a result of the incident. A passer-by described the horrific smash to journalists and said, "There was an almighty bang as the bike crashed with the car. Both the motorcyclist and his passenger were thrown into the air and landed in the road." He also revealed how Marc Almond seemed to be in a terrible state, saying, "He looked like he had done a lot of damage to his head." The former chart-topping artist had indeed done some quite serious damage to his head and doctors were concerned that his injuries might prove fatal. But after three weeks of around-the-clock hospital care he was deemed fit enough to be allowed home following what was described as a "remarkable" recovery. Within a matter of months he had recovered sufficiently to embark on a music tour of Europe and was said to have attributed his miraculous survival to the fact that he had been wearing a top-of-the-range helmet at the time of the motorbike accident. Heather Mills The motorbike accident happened just around the corner from Kensington Palace and left Miss Mills fighting for her life in hospital with a punctured lung and crushed ribs. She also received extensive personal injuries to her lower body and doctors were forced to insert a metal plate into her pelvis and amputate her left leg below the knee. Some people would have let such horrific injuries affect their life but not Heather. She was fitted with a prosthetic leg and immersed herself in charity work, helping provide artificial limbs to foreign victims of motorcycle accidents and other devastating incidents. Various other charity agendas followed and she was actually nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996. It was during a charity bash that the legendary Sir Paul McCartney first noticed the blonde amputee and it wasn't long before the couple were engaged. At the time of writing the subsequent marriage seems to have come to a somewhat sour end but she once told a journalist, "The overcoming of adversity and, ultimately, denying it the rite of passage, has been a constant and perpetual motive throughout my life." There's no doubt that Mills will get her life back on track just like she did following the tragic motorbike accident of 1993 and the determination that she's already shown is sure to stand her in good stead.
