A look at how BP365 helped after a horrific motorbike accident

Motorcycling is in Jimmy Bochenski's blood. His dad bought his first bike whilst flying for the RAF during the Second World War and even now, aged 80 something, he's still the proud owner of a 1960s Triumph.

So it was no surprise really when Jimmy got hooked at a young age. He bought his first bike, a rusty old Norton, at 17 and hasn't looked back since. For his fiftieth birthday he treated himself to a Honda Valkyrie F6C, an enormous beast of a bike with an awesome 1500cc, six cylinder water-cooled engine. It was his pride and joy and he regularly took it along for weekend ride-outs with his West Country motorcycle club.

Jimmy BochenskiThat was until disaster struck in the form of a motorbike accident on a sunny summer day back in July 2004.

Jimmy was cruising along on a North Devon country lane, sharing wind with a couple of motorcycle club buddies, enjoying the sun on his face and listening with delight to the roar of his meaty engine. Going around a bend, however, he was suddenly faced with a terrifying sight.

Coming towards him, moving at a ridiculous speed and on the wrong side of the road, was a truck. The driver was on the phone and looked to be completely oblivious of what was about to happen.

"The instant I saw that lorry coming towards me, I thought that was the end." Jimmy said.

"I didn't have time to think about anything; I just slammed on the brakes and tried to steer as far away from it as possible."

But Jimmy didn't stand a chance. Yanking his bike to the left to try and avoid the oncoming truck he lost his balance and the bike toppled onto its side. Somehow he managed to throw himself clear, sliding across the tarmac and away from the bike.

Finally seeing what was happening, the truck driver hit his brakes and tried to avoid the inevitable collision. But it was too late.

The front of the lorry smashed into the Valkyrie, crushing it instantly and sending scraps of metal and pieces of debris spinning across the road. If Jimmy had still been with the bike he would have died for sure, but his quick reactions seemed to have saved his life.

He didn't survive completely unscathed, however, as the rear offside wheel of the skidding truck thundered towards him, running over his outstretched leg.

"The pain was unbelievable; I can't describe it." Jimmy revealed. "I knew at that moment that something was seriously wrong but I couldn't have imagined how bad it was."

And it was bad. The motorcycle accident had left Jimmy's foot, ankle and lower leg seriously injured. The bones were crushed and, despite battling for hours, the doctors were unable to save his leg. They were forced to amputate below the knee and in so doing seemingly ended Jimmy's biking days forever.

It was a miracle that he actually survived the motorbike accident and, with the massive love and support of his family, friends and motorcycling club, was discharged from hospital within a month.

The serious personal injuries that Jimmy sustained in the motorcycle accident changed his life forever but he refused to be beaten. Having one leg wouldn't affect his job as an accountant, but he did require some major changes to his house to make things a bit easier.

He felt he deserved compensation for the pain and damage that had been caused and to help towards the lifestyle changes that were required, and so logged onto the internet to find someone who could help.

He came across BP365 and was impressed by the fact that they we're actually bikers ourselves. He also liked our no win, no fee service because he didn't see why he should have to pay out to claim compensation that he believed to be rightfully his.

So Jimmy gave us a ring and, after giving us all the details of the motorbike accident, we told him we could definitely help. Because of his dreadful personal injury, he wasn't really interested in a replacement bike or leathers and only wanted to make a compensation claim against the driver of the truck.

We set the claim in motion and Jimmy's personal injury solicitors made sure he had access to the best medical experts in order to assess the extent of his injuries and the true impact they would have on his life. The solicitors also engaged the services of a case manager to organise the rehabilitation that he needed to help him re-adjust to his new lifestyle. The specialist helped with a variety of issues that cropped up including arranging a physiotherapist as well as a specialist to assist him with his prosthetic leg.

So clear-cut was the case that it didn't even reach the courtroom. Instead, the insurance company of the lorry driver admitted complete liability for the road accident. Discussions between Jimmy's personal injury solicitor and the insurance company proved fruitful and it was agreed that he would receive a total sum of just under £80,000.

This included nearly £5,000 in lost earnings, money to cover the cost of buying a specially-converted car as well as just over £55,000 to compensate him for the pain, trauma and distress of losing his leg. On top of this, Jimmy also received a cheque for the full value of his bike.

The whole process cost him absolutely nothing and he received 100% of the compensation. His personal injury solicitors didn't charge him a penny and instead charged their fees to the insurance company of the driver responsible for the motorcycle accident.

Jimmy's now getting to grips with life after the incident and even hopes to get back on a bike one day in the not too distant future.

Speaking two years after that fateful July day, he said, "BP365 were there just when I needed them.

"If it wasn't for them, along with my family and friends of course, I don't think I would've ever got back on my feet.

"Well, you know what I mean," he added with a cheeky grin and a wink that just goes to show you can take the man off the bike, but you can't take the biker out of the man.
