Whiplash and other injuries related to road accidents
Whether they are minor or more severe road accidents usually cause some kind of personal injury. Whiplash injury is probably the most common injury sustained by people when they are involved in road accidents but here is some information on the most typical personal injuries.
Neck or back injuries
Whiplash is a non-medical term used to describe an injury to neck muscles. Whiplash injury is a common result of road accidents, contact sports, assaults and attacks. A strain to the back and the neck in extreme cases can cause spinal cord injury. Injury to any of the ligaments or muscles surrounding the spinal cord may cause considerable pain and severe cases can lead to permanent disability.
Head injuries
Traumatic brain injuries are caused by a lack of protection to the head. Motorcycle accidents, bicycle accidents and high speed impact or ejection from a motor vehicle are common causes of this serious head injury. In some cases the likelihood of suffering a traumatic brain injury can be reduced by wearing a cycle helmet, motorcycle helmet or installing air bags in your car. Other types of head injuries include blunt and penetration head traumas:
Blunt trauma - Caused by a direct blow or impact force such as hitting a car windscreen or landing on the road in a road accident.
Penetration trauma - Caused by a sharp object such as metal or glass breaking through the skull in a car crash. These injuries usually require surgery to remove the object and cause instant death in extreme cases.
Limb injuries and fractures
Fractures are breaks or cracks to the bone. Fractures that penetrate the surface of the skin can be especially harmful since they can obstruct blood flow to the affected limb. The type of impact during a car crash determines the types of limb injuries sustained by the driver and passengers. A side impact collision may cause a fracture to the upper leg and/or lower leg, shoulder and upper arm. Pelvic fractures can also be sustained when a car is hit from the side.
