Vehicle accidents and child pedestrian safety

Many pedestrians are seriously injured or killed in vehicle accidents every year. There were more than 4,700 pedestrian fatalities as a result of road traffic accidents in 2003.

A large proportion of these pedestrians are children that walk to school every day. One fourth of 5-9 year old pedestrians were killed in road traffic accidents in 2003.

Children are at more risk of suffering personal injuries from vehicle accidents since they are smaller and more difficult for drivers to see. Parents can also misjudge their child’s abilities to cross the road without assistance. Young children may underestimate a car’s distance or speed and this could also result in a car accident.

In October 2005 an International Walk to School Week was held in an effort to promote and improve road safety for children.
