Rehabilitation, treatment and compensation following a spinal cord injury

Two people everyday are permanently paralysed in the UK , following an accident which damages their spinal cord. The majority of our clients have been injured either in a heavy fall, car or motorbike accident, or in a sporting accident.

Spinal cord injuries can be devastating, often resulting in complete loss of movement and sensation. A spinal injury where the legs are effecting is called paraplegia. Tetraplegia is where the legs and the arms are affected. Bladder, bowel and sexual function are often affected too. Many people who suffer a spinal cord injury will become wheelchair users.

People who have suffered a spinal cord injury will likely require immediate and specialist medical care. There are 13 specialist spinal injuries units in the UK and Republic of Ireland . See Spinal injuries units for more information...

If you are in hospital following a spinal cord injury, your Consultant will discuss with you whether they feel you would benefit from being transferred to one of these units. The Spinal Injuries Association can provide support and guidance to you at this stage. www.spinal.co.uk

If you have sustained a spinal cord injury, you should receive an extensive period of rehabilitation during which time you will come into contact with a number of health professionals, including doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, clinical psychologists and liaison nurses. Where liability can be established early on we can obtain interim payments to fund care and housing which are so essential in the early stages after a spinal cord injury and which the statutory authorities have difficulty providing.
